It is particularly recognisable because of its rigging which uses a sprit to support the upper part of the sail. Since its creation, the Optimist has not evolved much, the only major change being the abandonment of wood for plastic.
The Optimist is the most popular dinghy for children to learn to sail. With only 35kg on the scale, it allows young sailors to be autonomous with their opti and a trailer. In regattas, it can be sailed from 8 to 14 years old and allows to learn the points of sail, the manoeuvres, the tactics, etc. Many of today's top sailors have gone through the Opti.
The Optimist (which is also named Oppie, Opy, Bathtub) is an incredible boat: 400,000 units have been produced to date.
Several designs try to propose a modern versio of the Optimist, most notable of these is the Openbic by Bic Sport.
