The 420, all-purpose dinghy, sailing and regattas

This boat is often a step between the Optimist and its big Olympic brother the 470, but also increasingly towards the one-design habitable. The hull has not evolved since Christian Maury's initial design in 1958. However, its fittings have benefited from the technologies of the moment. The result is a fun boat with a sometimes random stability downwind. A very full regatta calendar allows everyone, whatever their level, to sail a 420.

Finally, it should be noted that the 420's supremacy is rivalled by the skiffs. Indeed, the 29er is gradually replacing it in sports schools. However, its future is not buried for all that because it is very widely distributed and loved by "leisure" enthusiasts.

For a more leisurely approach, the RS500 now offers a slightly more modern alternative to the 420 for a similar programme and crews. On the other hand, there is no one-design regatta circuit in France as the 420 offers.
