Sailing-rowing dinghy from the famous Cornish Crabber brand. This is the CORMORANT. A 12-foot, 150-kg dinghy. Not to be confused with the Morlaix Bay Cormorant. Lightweight, high-performance modern polyester rowing sails (maintenance-free). Very stable and fun. A boat that gives the impression of sailing on a larger boat. Comfortable, roomy and safe, ideal for family outings and hikes (canopy and tent for anchoring).
The entire boat has been designed around the concept of water touring. The wooden floor at the bottom of the boat, for example, is removable and can be raised to form a bed base and double bed in the boat. A tent has also been custom-designed by the shipyard, and can be set up above the boom in just a few minutes. Around the benches and coamings there are also deep storage compartments for all your camping gear. This boat is ready to go camping alone on a desert island!
Model: CORMORANT Builder: Cornish Crabber Construction material: Polyester hull (like 99% of pleasure boats, maintenance-free) and wood finish (mast, boom, scantlings, rudder and centerboard, etc.). Maximum engine power: 3.5 hp Length: 3.73m Beam: 1.70m Weight: 150 kgs (can be easily launched alone with a beach cart) Sail area: 8.18 m2
The Cornish Crabber CORMORANT can be compared to a small Caravelle or a Skellig or even a Gazelle des Sables in France. It can carry up to 4 people on a family outing. The advantage of this dinghy over the Caravelle or Skellig is its low weight and compactness. Weighing just 150 kgs, it can be launched by a single person. Small removable launch wheels are available to make launching on the beach even easier (not supplied). Storage and handling are also facilitated by its small size. It is extremely stable for its size and weight. This stability means that children and novices can board in complete safety. The boom is high. It's unsinkable, and particularly easy to right alone in the event of desalination. So it's safer than older Caravelles.
Rigging is simple and easy. It's also possible to reduce sail area by reefing the mainsail. Last but not least, masting takes just a few minutes, which means you can sail more often, for longer, and change water surfaces more easily. It can also be rowed or motorized. It can also be used to participate in rallies of old rigs and maritime festivals (Brest 2024, Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan, etc.). Sailing and rowing enthusiasts also regularly gather to sail together!
The Cormorant belongs to a special category of dinghies, known as rando dinghies. This category is unique. They are not to be confused with the sporty dinghies so well known in sailing centers. The approach to sailing with rando dinghies allows you to concentrate on the pleasure of sailing, and forget all the worries and complexity that can be involved in setting up a more conventional sailboat (mast only possible in a minute, neoprene not compulsory, etc.). If you'd like to know more about this rando concept and discover other models, watch the video on YOUTUBE: PUFFINS TREK "comment bien choisir son dΓ©riveur de rando".
